iTranslate - Translator App Reviews

So I first reviewed this app about two years ago when it came out, and I can’t believe I’m still writing about the same glaring issue; it *only* lives in the menubar. This is a big issue for those of us with small screened Macs, as our menubars can get way too crowded. However, it also means that you can only paste so much text in its tiny pop-down window, making it a problem for power users who need to paste a lot of text. Even their iPad app lets you paste more text than this one. Plus, having it not in the dock is less convenient when switching between open windows (if using, say, Mission Control), and clearly confuses some users when they click the iTranslate app icon in Launchpad and seemingly nothing happens when they don’t notice a new icon being added to their menubar. This was my own classmate’s issue when she told me her translate app wasn’t working; she clicked on the icon in the Launchpad, and seemingly nothing happened. She had no idea that another tiny icon was added to the many occupying the menubar. Having it run as a mini Menubar app should be an option, but definitely not the default to avoid this type of obvious confusion and the other issues outlined above. So yeah, this app absolutely needs to leave the Menubar for a number of reasons. I’ve written and tweeted to the developers several times these past two years and have gotten nothing in the way of a response, which is a shame, becaue their iOS apps translate very well. In fact, this app does translate well for the languages I use it for (Spanish, French, and Irish) but the awful usability problems outlined above take away so much from its overall utility. So, suffice to say I’m pretty disappointed that after two years of waiting for this basic improvement, all we got was a generic “bug fixes” update with no acknowledgment of this issue. I really hope these devs are listening but I don’t have a lot of faith they are...

Total let down. On iOS it works as you would believe it should and while not prefect it is very good. You can cut and paste text in the target language and listen to it to get a proper way to say it. On the desk top you pay 9.99 and you have a little drop down tab and can not listen to the imported text you want the learn to say, only the translation. Larger screen, more powerful computer, less features, more money= bad investment. So it is a nice idea but when you do not like it your stuck with the payment and product of little value. Plus it is continues to charge you over and over again, wrong. I want a refund

I find this app very useful and easy to use!

For many of us, Romanization of languages is the only way we can speak or read what’s written. For instance, the Urdu and Arabic Romanization leaves much to be desired. Better work needs to be done regarding Romanization. Thank you.

If you are translating phrases into English, it does a very good job that is comparable (but different) to the Google translate tools. I have tried three very different languages (Spanish, Swedish and Turkish). I can’t speak about the quality of the translations between any of the other translation languages. Unfortunately there is a small text buffer for the translation. Another reviewer said it is 500 characters which doesn’t even hold a typical paragraph worth of text. Also you are left guessing where the 500 characters ends. It would be helpful to have a larger buffer, a different colour for the 500 characters (for example green for the first 500 characters, red after that) or to be able to automatically trim your text to 500 characters if you go over. Guessing the correct length is annoying.

Worth the money, very easy to use and developers are updating it often. One feedback: some words do have multiple meanings , so if there is a small button that would trigger showing additional meanings , that would be handy. thanks

I bought the same app for my ipad and it is fantastic. With the imac itranslate it only translates a few sentences at a time. and when I compared the same text from iPad itranslate and iMac itranslate they were different. The ipad translation was more accurate this app isnt worth buying

As far as the translating is concerned, I find that with short phrases, I’m comfortable with the translations. However, multiple sentences often result in something incoherent. So while the character limit that others comment on is sometimes inconvenient, it’s not as much of a negative as it might be. Additionally, I notice that while the app is open, it connects to a third-party analytics site every 30 seconds. It will do this for hours on end. I find this really irritating and not trustworthy.

I downloaded this program to do some translations for work. I tried to open it on my MBP and it initially gave the appearance that it was opening but nothing happened after that. I realize it is not expensive but didn’t think that it would be a flop.

Çeviri çok yavaş sözlükden bakmak daha hızlı olur. Beş para etmez!!! Translation process is very slow, looking up on a dictionary would be faster. Waste of money!!! Echt lahm,

You are cheating people it takes about 1 min to translate a basic word dont say me your connection speed is low, its your slowness because i download 4.6gb data about 3.5 hours with my connection speed pay my money back because im deleting your stupid app right now

I used to use Google Translate but this tool is amazing and it is build in our Mac menu :3

Почему не выдаются различные варианты перевода для одного слова? Например, как в google translate. Нельзя изменять размер окна перевода. Думал ускорить работу, но вместо этого потерял деньги. I bought the app as an alternative to Google Translate as it has the advantage of sitting in the toolbar without having to go online in my web browser. As a translation app it does what it is supposed to do but as with any computer based translation it is not perfect and you might find yourself needing to use another online translator if your translated text still seems strange and you have no knowledge of the language. Overall it has done the job for what I have needed. Things to improve - It would be a lot better if they remove the character limit as I found myself frustrated that the input box could only accept 500 characters. I don’t expect it to be unlimited characters but 500 is a bit limited. It would be useful if you could drag to adjust the size of the window tab as no doubt some users like myself are on iMacs/use bigger monitors where screen size is less of a problem. It would also be good if the text size could be adjusted as it is currently fixed and you cannot see all of your inputted text and the translated text without having to scroll up and down in each of the 2 sections. This is where translation in a browser is better but this app can match it with a few modifications. I hope the developer sees my comments and will look to improve the app over time. Well done for the first version.

wish i had read the other review. how do i get a refund?

Having used an iOS version I gave this a try despite the report that it wouldn’t open after download. Works fine, location on the Finder top strip very convenient.

I’ve grown tired of opening up a web browser and surfing to online dictionaries and translation services every time I need to look up a German word. This solves the problem instantly: the app sits in your menu bar (which, I’ll admit is starting to get a little crowded) and provides drop-down translation for words or sentences. It’s fast, the type is suitable large, and the setup application suggests that the creators took pride in their work. I’m very pleased.

Downloaded the app and it will not open. I wish I would have read the other review which stated the same problem. Could have saved myself $4.99!

Whilst I do know eight languages proficiently, this app is absoltuely brilliant for finding any word in a split second — especially when working with German (as German is second in vocabulary to English). If you do a great deal of research and need to work with multiple languages, this is both a time-saver and outstanding.
