iTranslate - Translator App Reviews

This has proven to be very handy for me while learning french and german. One of my favorite things to do is to read articles and books in which ever language I’m practicing at the time; I use this app to help me understand (not just translate) the meaning of new words or strange sounding phrases. As far as translation services go, this one is by far one of the best (I dare say I prefer this to google’s translate page). It is convenient, very easy to use, and the most accurate one I’ve used thus far.

I have the iOS version and it includes speech recognition and it is excellent. I assumed this app would do the same, however, it doesn’t. So just be alert that it only translates what you type or paste into the comment box. It will speak it to you if you click the triangle (for many languages.)

Seems to translate well, but it is a hassle to use because you have to copy and paste the text to be translate into a menu window. I could live with that if it was not such a small buffer. To read an email, I have to cut and paste over and over. So each paragraph has to be done separately. This makes for slow going. What I wish it would do is allow me to select a sentence or paragraph and translate it, then provide a button to press that would get the next sentence and translate it. This post is a bit over 640 characters, so I wuold have to translate it in 2 parts, and I would have to guess where the 500 character point is located.

iTranslate requires an Internet connection, so the only advantage over Google Translate is being able to quickly access it from the menu bar. That’s about the only positive thing I can say in support of iTranslate. It’s cheap at $4.99, but still about $4 more than it should cost for what it does. The biggest drawback is that you can’t select from various definitions of words. Enter “washer” in English, and in French it spits back “machine à laver.” Did you mean “washer” like the hardware part, and not a washing machine? Sorry, iTranslate doesn’t care. (Google Translate correctly offers both “rondelle” and “machine à laver” as translations.) Many of the multi-word definitions are similarly really poor transliterations. If you used them in any kind of communication (formal or informal), you’ll at best get weird looks and at worst be completely misunderstood.

Pretty disappointing. I remember translation software 25 years ago and this is no improvement. For some it might work. It is better than nothing for people who know absolutely nothing about the target language. For me, I put in for an English translation of a sentence into Spanish. This software translated a 3rd person plural into 2nd person polite or 3rd person singular. But its like, for $5 what do you expect? On detection, a skill that you would think is fairly simple, on two different attempts of 3 words statements, not idioms but logically written short phrases, I got “server error”. So that pretty much eliminates that potential plus for me. The verbal help the software gives I thought was decent, especially with a speed control setting, and without a robotic voice. However, I could not cut and paste longer samples, which I would think a translation software would have. With the image that Apple is trying to cultivate, putting an “i” in front of this name, I don’t think helps any. When I pay 2 to 3 times as much for a computer, I expect most everything to work noticably better, to be designed more thoughtfully with more expertise. This software was not! I know that language is extremely complicated as I teach it, but you would think the “best” computer in the world could produce a little more progress over attempts of this type that the industry made 25 years ago.

Suddenly app stop to work with message: No Internet connection. But all others apps working well and Internet exist! What the hell???!!!

The translation results appear to be identical to Google Translate (word for word). Good for quickly translating single words. Results of translated paragraphs are mostly not usable.

With a required internet connection, you would expect this app to be blazing fast. Not so - it takes forever and a day to translate a simple word. While I could live with the speed issues, I cannot deal with the lack of translation options it gives. It gives only 1 translation even if several words are possible. More often than not, it’s not the word you need. For my money, it was a complete waste of $4.99

Good program. Quickly and always available when you have a question. That’s great. Add voice input for translation and it’s five stars. I’m looking for the microphone icon :-)

Translating from English to Polish is fun and helps learn the language!

A while back I wrote a positive review of this app but now, after using it for several weeks, I found that Google Translate often provides me with better translations between English and German. iTranslate is convienient for quickly looking up a word and finding its gender, but I can’t use if for translating sentences. Note that this app only works with an internet connection.

Verfy helpful when I am online talking to my wife on the other side of the world the window stays open & does not get in my way. I don’t have to switch webpage or anything like that for instance what I had to do with another I will not mention here. Has a helpful icon for the top bar of the desk top.

It is a great app for quick lookup of terms between languages. It missed an icon for Yosemite’s dark theme mode but it is now fixed. Thanks for paying attention to such details. It makes the difference.

Very fast, very available on my desktop for swift use, nice features and extensive languages. It is very supportive for my writings.

This app is very useful and I use it for everything, but isn’t it annoying that you have to always press the icon so that it can go away. In my opinion, when you press somewhere else on the screen, it should get out automatically. (Ex: Dropbox, Shazam, 1password 5, Boom)

I like it on my desktop to easily translate and play it back for you. Keep improving. You should maintain a history of say the last 30 paragraphs translated. I couldn’t translate this Hindi for some reason for my friends in India: Aditi Bhabi g aisi koi haseena mili hi nhi Please fix and until then you only get 3 stars. Kenneth

I bought this translation app because it supports Thai translation. However, when I want to find defination from English to Thai. This app oftenly not translate word to Thai. It does not work well for Thai.

Translations work when typing directly into the source. Pasting an email message in Spanish did not work. Am I missing a menu bar-How To—the Website Support needs an FAQ. I could not find the Save function. Each translation typed in copied and pasted into another app required deleting the source and target to translate another message. I must be missing part of the software??? I must say what I do get translated is a comprehensive success.

I had tried several of the other free or cheap translate apps and found numerous errors on some basic words. I like having this app in the menu bar, typically just pop it open when I am doing rosetta stone lessons. I haven’t run across any mistranslations yet and it seems to find the word even if I don’t know the proper stem.

Pretty frustrating to not be able to open a $10 app either from App folder or open box at purchase. Help!
